Friday, January 19, 8pm at Community Music Center
Music from the newly released CD, Ben Goldberg School, Vol. 1: The Humanities, will be performed by Ben Goldberg, clarinet; Kasey Knudsen, alto sax; Jeff Cressman, trombone; Rob Reich, piano and accordian; David Ewell, bass; and Jason Lewis, drums. Joining them on vibraphone will be Emerging Artist Dan Neville.
The music is inspired by Goldberg’s artist-in-residency at the 15th-century castle, Civitella Ranieri in Umbria, Italy. There, the beautiful landscape, food, wine, and frescos by Piero della Francesco produced a camaraderie of ideas, inquiry, struggle, and humor. The CD’s title, Humanities, references the grouping of pursuits that make us human, and a reminder, in dark times, of what it is we are defending.
Says Ben Ratcliff of the New York Times, Goldberg’s music “conveys a feeling of joyous research into the basics of polyphony and collective improvising, the constant usefulness of musicians intuitively coming together and pulling apart.”
