Clairdee & the Ken French Trio

Friday, November 17, 8pm at Community Music Center | tickets |

Vocalist Clairdee performs with Ken French, piano; Gary Brown, bass; and Jim Zimmerman, drums. Her special guest will be vocalist and percussionist Daria Johnson.

Clairdee is a captivating song stylist who has has an intimate, vulnerable and gentle way with a ballad, yet can swing or shout at will. With her lustrous voice, heartfelt delivery, and scene-stealing charisma, she has honed a repertoire of standards set to state of the art arrangements that are equally smart and entertaining. Says Nancy Wilson, “In the tradition of all great vocalists, Clairdee infuses her own unique style while always remaining true to the song itself.” She is unpretentious, charming and charismatic, and her performances convey a welcoming air of hospitality. Clairdee’s “mission is to engage, uplift and build community through music — creating narrative that inspires beyond the stage.”

Daria Johnson is a drummer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist. Her style is solid, smooth, dependable and sensual. Her dynamic spirit has earned her the title as one of the most sought-after drummers in the Bay Area, having performed with Eoin Harrington, Theresa Perez, Esperanza Spalding, Sean Leahy, Four Year Bender, Crystal Monee Hall, Edna Love, Trevor Garrod (Tea Leaf Green), Dan Lebowitz (ALO), Kofy Brown, Vortex Tribe, Vudustu, Papa Mali and Eric McFadden. Matt Eakle Band

Friday, November 10, 6pm at Copperfield’s Books, San Rafael

Discover Flute Fired Fusion with Matt Eakle, flute; Joey Edelman, piano; Alex Baum, bass; and Jack Dorsey, drums. Performing all original compositions that evoke the blues, soul, and jazz; their spell-binding, adrenaline-pumping jams transfix and transport. Matt Eakle takes preconceived notions of what a flute can do and blows them inside out. The beautiful tone he honed as a classical flutist contrasts with note bending growls and an entire lexicon of percussive effects. While always adhering to the groove, the band taps trans-cultural sources with roots as disparate as Mumbai and New Orleans. Their original compositions are launching pads for improvisation, and every performance includes one completely improvised piece.

The Emerging Artist will be alto sax player Gio Mendez. A student at Casa Grande High, he performed at the most recent Healdsburg Jazz Festival as a member of the Big House Quintet.

This free concert is a collaboration between Jazz in the Neighborhood and Copperfield’s Books, which provides use of their space. Though there is no income from ticket sales, Jazz in the Neighborhood pays each musician a guaranteed fair wage. To make these concerts possible, we depend on contributions from our JITN membership, audience members, and sponsors such as Magic Flute and Bananas at Large. We extend our thanks and appreciation for your continuing support, because we couldn’t do it without you!
