Terrence Brewer Quartet

Thursday, January 25, 7:30pm at Piedmont Center for the Arts

The Terrence Brewer Quartet perform a tribute to the great saxophonist and composer, Wayne Shorter. The program will include music from Shorter’s classic Blue Note jazz catalog, spanning from his seminal work to his later fusion material with Weather Report. Terrence Brewer,  a multiple-award winning guitarist and 2016 inductee into the Pittsburg Arts & Entertainment Hall of Fame, counts Shorter as one of his musical heroes. Rounding out the quartet will be Art Khu on piano, Shimpei Ogawa playing acoustic bass, and Dillon Vado on drums. The Emerging Artist for this event is trumpeter, Kate Williams, a member of the SFJazz High School All-Stars Band and a Jazz Search West finalist.

Ben Goldberg School

Friday, January 19, 8pm at Community Music Center

Music from the newly released CD, Ben Goldberg School, Vol. 1: The Humanities, will be performed by Ben Goldberg, clarinet; Kasey Knudsen, alto sax; Jeff Cressman, trombone; Rob Reich, piano and accordian; David Ewell, bass; and Jason Lewis, drums. Joining them on vibraphone will be Emerging Artist Dan Neville.

The music is inspired by Goldberg’s artist-in-residency at the 15th-century castle, Civitella Ranieri in Umbria, Italy. There, the beautiful landscape, food, wine, and frescos by Piero della Francesco produced a camaraderie of ideas, inquiry, struggle, and humor. The CD’s title, Humanities, references the grouping of pursuits that make us human, and a reminder, in dark times, of what it is we are defending.

Says Ben Ratcliff of the New York Times, Goldberg’s music “conveys a feeling of joyous research into the basics of polyphony and collective improvising, the constant usefulness of musicians intuitively coming together and pulling apart.”

$18 advance / $20 day of show / $10 students & seniors

Reasons for Moving featuring special guest Allison Miller

Friday, January 12, 9pm at Bird & Beckett

Darren Johnston, trumpet — Larry Ochs, tenor/sopranino sax — Fred Frith, guitar — Allison Miller, drums

The concert is a special reunion of the ensemble on Reasons for Moving CD, featuring guitar iconoclast Fred Frith, ROVA co-founder Larry Ochs, and musical chameleon trumpeter Darren Johnston, with the addition of the New York based super-star of the drums Allison Miller.

The all-improvised concert is a pre-launch for their 2018 tour of Europe that begins at the Jazzdor festival in France. Back in 2009,  the group made its critically celebrated Reasons for Moving recording for Not Two Records, which mixed elements of jazz, rock, and art music from around the world. Accompanying Frith, Ochs, and Johnston were the rhythm section of Devon Hoff on bass and Ches Smith on drums. This time the ensemble is backed by Miller, a creative and in-demand drummer who has captivated New York and Bay Area audiences alike. Catch them as they embark on the world stage.

This is a Guaranteed Fair Wage Fund event where each musician will be paid $150 in advance, regardless of ticket sales. Jazz in then Neighborhood makes this possible by subsidizing 40% of their pay. Bird & Beckett and the Jazz Philanthropists Union guarantees the rest. For tickets and other information, please contact Bird & Beckett.
