Laura Klein Trio: The Music of Marian McPartland

Weds., October 17, 7:30 pm, Rendon Hall at the California Jazz Conservatory

Come and discover the unique music of Marian McPartland, one of the most beloved figures in jazz. At a time when female instrumentalists were marginalized, Marian achieved wide recognition as a pianist, composer, author, educator, and radio host.  Pianist Laura Klein, bassist Ruth Davies and drummer Kelly Fasman will celebrate the centennial year of Marian’s birth by performing her gorgeous but rarely heard original compositions, as well as other music associated with her. This all star trio wowed sold out audiences earlier this year at Piedmont Piano and the Sacramento Jazz Coop; this is an event not to be missed!

Pianist Laura Klein heard and met Marian on many occasions, and performed for her. She was deeply influenced by McPartland’s  lyrical, personal musical storytelling and rich harmonic sensibility. Klein has led performances of the music of Marian McPartland  at SF Jazz, Piedmont Piano, and for the Sacramento Jazz Coop. Klein and her husband Tony Corman are co-leaders of the FivePlay Jazz Quintet, which performs their original compositions and has appeared at festivals and concert venues. Their CDs have received critical acclaim and international airplay. Klein’s compositions were featured on KCSM’s “In the Moment.” She is an Associate Professor of the Alexander Technique at the California Jazz Conservatory. For more information, visit www.lauraklein.net

Ruth Davies, an outstanding bassist on SF Bay Area scene, has performed and/or recorded with many jazz and blues greats including Keb’ Mo’, Clark Terry, John Lee Hooker, Bonnie Raitt and many others. She toured the world for ten years with the late Charles Brown, and continues to spend considerable time abroad, touring with Denise Jannah, Dmitri Matheny, European pianist/composer Amina Figarova, and Elvin Bishop. Davies is deeply involved in music education and has taught in public schools, at the Stanford Jazz Workshop, and as part of San Francisco Symphony’s “Adventures in Music”. She has presented music programs to over one thousand school groups. For more information, visit http://www.ruthdavies.com/

Drummer Kelly Fasman is dynamic performer whose propulsive playing adds excitement and dynamic range in any musical setting. She has performed with Kenny Loggins, The Moody Blues, Joan Baez, and Joan Rivers. She was the house drummer for The American Musical Theatre of San Jose, and has worked with Teatro Zinzanni, Broadway By the Bay, and Theatreworks. Fasman is the powerhouse of the 17 piece jazz orchestra, the Morchestra.
