Howard Wiley’s Extra Nappy

Wednesday, October 24, 7:30 pm, Rendon Hall at California Jazz Conservatoryย

Extra Nappy offers a glimpse into an organically-developing musical movement encapsulating the vibrant history of African American music, from gospel, blues, jazz, R&B, and funk, all the way up to contemporary hip-hop.

Extra Nappy tenor saxophonist Howard Wiley has been making the rounds on the Bay Area music scene since his teenage years as a protรฉgรฉ of the Dynamic Miss Faye Carol. His playing is steeped African-American idioms, from gospel, blues and jazz to R&B, funk and hip-hop. This loose and limber quartet delivers improvisation-laced arrangements of classic songs and features drummer Aaron Green, who toured with Lalah Hathaway, Sheila E and Cyril Neville, pianist/organist Lionel โ€œLJโ€ Holoman, and bassist Michael โ€œTinyโ€ Lindsey. Wileyโ€™s quartet plays next-level grooves with such a deep pocket itโ€™s not just nappy, itโ€™s Extra Nappy.

Jazz in the Neighborhood presents its Wednesday night series at CJC with financial support from AFM Musicians Union Local 6.
