The Jawn-tet at West Oakland Sessions!

Join us Sunday, July 11th for a live recording of the debut concert of the Jawn-tet. This live concert at the Dresher Ensemble Studio is part of a series of West Oakland Sessions featuring young jazz musicians based in the Bay Area, on select Sundays through September. All featured musicians will receive high quality audio and video recordings of the concert, and will be paid a guaranteed fair wage in line with Jazz in the Neighborhood’s standard.

Emerging as a response to the isolation of the past year, the debut of the Jawn-tet is a refreshing and long overdue return to live music for these five young musicians. Virtuosic Bay Area drummer Genius Wesley propels his new quintet through innovative takes on old standards and intrepid originals, contrasting sheets of sound against insistent bebop momentum. After meeting pianist Luis Peralta through a choral orchestra in Berkeley, and Tommy Noble (sax), Isaac Coyle (bass), and Jed Holtman (guitar) at an improvisation class taught by Howard Wiley, the group combined what had already become a loose collective into this new group. Their debut at the West Oakland Sessions will be the first recording of the Jawn-tet.

Brown, Wilcox, Bowman Trio

Saturday, January 18, 7:30 pm at Bird & Beckett

Saxophonist Sheldon Brown, six-string bassist Michael Wilcox, and drummer Bryan Bowman continue in the tradition of Sonny Rollins, one of the earliest proponents of the tenor/bass/drums format. As a trio, they explore a wide variety of music that has interested them over the years—from Brazilian choro, Bulgarian music, and the music of Herbie Nichols to pieces adapted from the classical repertoire by composers like Brahms, Faure and Machaut.

The Brown Wilcox Bowman Trio is a unique partnership of melody, harmony and rhythm between 6 string electric bass, reeds and drums.

They explore a wide range of themes from contemporary jazz, classical music and world music influences creating dialogues that and unexpected and exciting.

This is a Guaranteed Fair Wage Fund event where each musician will be paid in advance, regardless of ticket sales. Jazz in the Neighborhood makes this possible by subsidizing 40% of their pay. Eric Shifrin & The In Crowd

Friday, December 13, 5:30-8 pm at Bird & Beckett

Eric Shifrin, piano & vocals — Rick Elmore , trombone — Bing Nathan, bass — Randy Lee Odell,  drums

In addition to the normal “In Crowd” repertoire of upbeat and lesser performed  swing,  latin and blues tunes, this concert will include selections which honor the memory of Ralph Carney.  Eric and Ralph formed a band called EaR Candy  (Eric and Ralph) which performed several times at Bird and Beckett before Ralph’s untimely death two years ago.  Ralph’s unique voice has been sorely missed in the Bay Area, especially by the musicians in this ensemble, who collaborated with Ralph on many occasions.

Jazz in the Neighborhood’s Guaranteed Fair Wage Fund will provide a subsidy for this date, allowing Bird & Beckett to pay a “fair wage” of $150 per musician for this engagement, double their regular guarantee on a Friday evening! The $20 cover charge at the door is a crucial component of that guarantee, though a sliding scale is available to those who need avail themselves of it. The Guaranteed Fair Wage Fund was established with the aim of raising gigging musicians’ wage standards so they can afford to stay in this very expensive city and region. Your donations to Jazz in the Neighborhood and to the Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project make it possible to keep live jazz happening in the Bay Area.

Lisa B and the Reverberant Band

Saturday, November 16, 7:30-10 at Bird & Beckett

Lisa B (Lisa Bernstein) celebrates the release of her seventh record, Reverberant: Poems & Music Accompanying Lisa B’s spoken and sung verse will be Ben Flint and Scott R. Looney, both on  piano & keyboards; Marcus Shelby, bass; and Isaac Schwartz, drums.

The new record’s theme of reverberation links jazz stories with tales of spiritual self-realization. In a departure from Lisa B’s previous albums  – which feature her jazz vocals and poetic rap in original songs and standards – Reverberant is grounded in her free-verse poems, spiced with singing and musical compositions created with stellar Bay Area musicians. Many of the poems appeared in esteemed literary journals, such as Kenyon Review. The evening’s performance will also include tunes from Lisa B’s 2018 record, I Get A Kick: Cole Porter Reimagined, as well as other fan favorites, such as “Joe Williams Died Walking/Every Day I Have the Blues” and “Holiday in Oakland.”

This is a Guaranteed Fair Wage Fund event where each musician will be paid $150 in advance, regardless of ticket sales. Jazz in the Neighborhood makes this possible by subsidizing 40% of their pay. Bird & Beckett and the Jazz Philanthropists Union guarantees the rest.
