Rob Reich Swings Left

Thursday, April 25, 7:30 pm at Piedmont Center for the Arts

The Rob Reich Swings Left sextet plays jazz rooted in the classic swing era of the late 1930s that’s perfect for dancing. Their repertoire includes classic arrangements of Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Artie Shaw, as well as new arrangements and originals by Reich that combine a hot rhythm with a cool sensibility. The players will be Rob Reich, piano; Andrew Stephens, trumpet; Ben Goldberg, clarinet; Craig Ventresco, guitar; Ollie Dudek, bass, and Eric Garland, drums.

Jazz in the Neighborhood’s Emerging Artist will be George Rogers, sax.

Jacknife

Thursday, April 25, 8:30-11:30 pm at Mr. Tipple’s

Saxophonist Steven Lugerner continues his explorations of the music of jazz legend Jackie McLean with Jacknife, a hard-hitting West Coast post-bop quintet featuring Danny Lubin-Laden on trombone with pianist Javier Santiago playing piano, bassist Eric Markowitz, and drummer Michael Mitchell. Together they explore tunes from McLean’s seminal early- and mid-1960s Blue Note albums Jacknife, It’s Time, Let Freedom Ring, and New Soil.

Lisa Mezzacappa Six plays Cosmicomics

Thursday, April 18, 8 pm at Key Teahouse

Lisa Mezzacappa, bass and compositions — Aaron Bennett, tenor sax — John Finkbeiner, guitar — Mark Clifford, vibes — Tim Perkis, electronics — Jordan Glenn, drums

Bay Area bassist and composer Lisa Mezzacappa and her sextet perform a suite of original music inspired by Italo Calvino’s funny, imaginative, gloriously nerdy Cosmicomics stories. Mezzacappa intersperses readings from Calvino’s stories with her inventive compositions, which feature rollicking grooves, layered melodies, and thrilling interaction by the virtuoso improvisers in her band. The group has recently performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Angel City Jazz Festival, and SFJAZZ Center. Come welcome these fantastic and imaginative musicians at their San Rafael debut!

Amendola Trio with Karl Evangelista and Jason Hoopes

Wednesday, April 17, 7:30 pm at California Jazz Conservatory Rendon Hall

Amendola Trio is the sound of three as one: Scott Amendola playing drums/percussion/electronics; Karl Evangelista on guitar; and Jason Hoopes, electric bass. Playing music written by all members, they explore the song to the sound. Together they have a unique connection that brings the music to interesting places. Never the same twice.

Jazz in the Neighborhood’s Emerging Artist will be Eva Piontowski, violin.

Guarneri Collective plays the music of Thelonius Monk

Mario Guarneri, trumpet — James Mahone, saxophone — Randy Vincent (subbing for John Schott), guitar — Miles Wick, bass — Deszon Claiborne, drums

In its debut performance, the Guarneri Collective will take their audience on a thrilling journey through the epic music of the legendary pianist/composer Thelonious Monk. Each member of the collective is contributing fresh arrangements of classic Monk compositions for this evening’s performance. If you’re a fan of Monk’s music or just love to hear adventurous Jazz in an intimate setting, you’ll not want to miss this special event.

Kasey Knudsen Sextet

Wednesday, April 3, 7:30 pm at California Jazz Conservatory

Performing will be Kasey Knudsen, saxophone; Henry Hung, trumpet; Rob Ewing, trombone; Dahveed Behroozi, piano; Miles Wick, bass; and Eric Garland, drums. Knudsen is a San Francisco-based saxophonist, composer, and educator. She earned her BA in Jazz Composition from Berklee College of Music in 2001. Since relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area, Knudsen has been commissioned by the Jazzschool’s Emerging Artist Series to write and perform new work as well as for Intersection For The Arts and the De Young Museum. She leads her own trio and sextet and co-leads the Schimscheimer Family Trio.
