Ian Dogole & Music Beyond Borders

Friday, July 13, 6pm at Copperfield’s Books in San Rafael

For pure musical adventure that crosses geographical borders and bridges the divide between “world” music and improvisational jazz, this assemblage is not to be missed. In addition to Ian Dogole on udu, cajon, djembe, talking drum, hang, kalimba, the trio features Sheldon Brown on tenor, alto & soprano saxophones, clarinet, bass clarinet, flute & other surprises, and Sascha Jacobsen on double bass. These three musical innovators will stir the musical cauldron with a fiery mix of original compositions, fresh interpretations of pieces by jazz and world music pioneers, and free improvisation that will unfold out of the ether right in front of your eyes and ears.

For over 35 years, Ian Dogole has articulated his vision of Music Beyond Borders as a multipercussionist, bandleader, educator, recording artist, composer and producer. He has released seven records and a DVD as a leader and has recorded and performed with artists such as Hamza el Din, Richie Cole, Paul McCandless and Alex deGrassi. Ian plays percussion instruments from Africa, the Middle East and South America. He has received numerous grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, InterMusic SF (formerly San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music) and the Marin Arts Council. Ian is an active music educator in the Marin County schools and a frequent volunteer for Bread & Roses. For more information about Ian Dogole, visit www.iandogole.com

Sheldon Brown has been an innovative force behind Ian Dogole’s bands, both as a performer and composer for more than 20 years.. Brown has appeared on a number of Ian’s recordings, including, Ionospheres, Night Harvest, Convergence, Crossroads and Ian Dogole & Hemispheres in Concert (DVD). He has performed internationally as a featured soloist with Cuban pianist Omar Sosa, and recorded on five of Sosaʼs albums. In addition to his own ensemble, the Sheldon Brown Group, he continues to perform with many groups in the San Francisco Bay Area, including Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, Clarinet Thing, Darren Johnston Quintet, Club Foot Orchestra and countless more. Bassist Sascha Jacobsen was born into a musical family, going as far back as his great, great, great, great-grandfather, who was a bassist for the Moscow Opera. Sascha has collaborated with a host of innovative artists and ensembles that span a diverse array of musical styles, including the Kronos Quartet, Bonnie Raitt and Randy Newman; Tango masters Raul Jaurena, Pepe Motta, and Maria Volonte; Flamenco greats Chuscales, Jose Luis Rodriguez, and Juanito Pascual; and Grammy-winning artists Mads Tolling and Tupac Mantilla, among others. Sascha has also performed as principal bassist with the Santa Cruz Symphony and the American Musical Theatre in San Jose, toured the world with the Argentine Tango group, Trio Garufa and is the founder of the Musical Art Quintet, which performs his original works. This free concert is a collaboration between Jazz in the Neighborhood and Copperfield’s Books, which provides use of their space. Though there is no income from ticket sales, Jazz in the Neighborhood pays each musician a guaranteed fair wage. To make these concerts possible, we depend on contributions from our JITN membership, audience members, and sponsors such as Magic Flute and Bananas at Large. We extend our thanks and appreciation for your continuing support, because we couldn’t do it without you!
