Come and discover the unique music of Marian McPartland, one of the most beloved figures in jazz. At a time when female instrumentalists were marginalized, Marian achieved wide recognition as a pianist, composer, author, educator, and radio host. Pianist Laura Klein, bassist Ruth Davies and drummer Kelly Fasman will celebrate the centennial year of Marian’s birth by performing her gorgeous but rarely heard original compositions, as well as other music associated with her. This all star trio wowed sold out audiences earlier this year at Piedmont Piano and the Sacramento Jazz Coop; this is an event not to be missed!
Pianist Laura Klein heard and met Marian on many occasions, and performed for her. She was deeply influenced by McPartland’s lyrical, personal musical storytelling and rich harmonic sensibility. Klein has led performances of the music of Marian McPartland at SF Jazz, Piedmont Piano, and for the Sacramento Jazz Coop. Klein and her husband Tony Corman are co-leaders of the FivePlay Jazz Quintet, which performs their original compositions and has appeared at festivals and concert venues. Their CDs have received critical acclaim and international airplay. Klein’s compositions were featured on KCSM’s “In the Moment.” She is an Associate Professor of the Alexander Technique at the California Jazz Conservatory.
