Friday, January 12, 9pm at Bird & Beckett
Darren Johnston, trumpet — Larry Ochs, tenor/sopranino sax — Fred Frith, guitar — Allison Miller, drums
The concert is a special reunion of the ensemble on Reasons for Moving CD, featuring guitar iconoclast Fred Frith, ROVA co-founder Larry Ochs, and musical chameleon trumpeter Darren Johnston, with the addition of the New York based super-star of the drums Allison Miller.
The all-improvised concert is a pre-launch for their 2018 tour of Europe that begins at the Jazzdor festival in France. Back in 2009, the group made its critically celebrated Reasons for Moving recording for Not Two Records, which mixed elements of jazz, rock, and art music from around the world. Accompanying Frith, Ochs, and Johnston were the rhythm section of Devon Hoff on bass and Ches Smith on drums. This time the ensemble is backed by Miller, a creative and in-demand drummer who has captivated New York and Bay Area audiences alike. Catch them as they embark on the world stage.
This is a Guaranteed Fair Wage Fund event where each musician will be paid $150 in advance, regardless of ticket sales. Jazz in then Neighborhood makes this possible by subsidizing 40% of their pay. Bird & Beckett and the Jazz Philanthropists Union guarantees the rest. For tickets and other information, please contact Bird & Beckett.
